Mad Men-Lipstick Scene

In the hit series’Mad Men’ camera techniquies are used to represent gender. In the first screen shot we see that the two men are in very sharp suits and one of the men are crossing their arms. This group shot shows us that there is a relationship between them, we also know from the suits they have a great deal of power in the firm and can control what goes on in the firm.

We also see that a master shot is used to explain to the audince what is happening. We see the two men sitting infornt of the glass, however the women are unaware that they are being watched. This indicates to us that men at the time where very ‘Ladish’ and did not care about women that much apart from wanting to sleep with them.

We also see another group shot of all the women very excited to test out the new lipsticks. The reason why they chose to shoot s group shot was to let the auidnece know they are all in the same boat and that they are all the same. One of the men refer to them as ‘chickens’ this tells us the women have no control and they do as they are told and they all follow.

Also a long shot is used to show the inside of the place where the women are, this looks like they are locked up in a experiment room which also links into what the men refeerred to them as ‘chickens’.

A close up on the womens bottom area was done purpusly to show how women will do anything for men to get there way. In a way it is bad for both men and women because, men in this scene are seen as hungry and insensitive and women are seen as ‘whoreish’ in order to get in the mens good books.

The Godfather- Soundtrack

In this scene we can hear some non-diegetic sound being played when the man steps out of the building towards the start of the scene. This music is very slow and loud almost like the call for Remembrance Day. It is very slow and mellow but has presence to it which is reflected because it plays when the man steps out suggesting he has lots of power in the film as the music is played only once we see him.

Also in this scene we can see dialogue between the man and women has been used. This has been in a way that we can tell the man has power of the women because she listens to the man and agrees he is right in what he is saying.

We also see in the scene that when the man gets angry he smacks the table and scares the women. This is an example of diegetic sound because the sound is in the sound and the women can hear it, hence why she got scared. This helps to make us further believe the man has more power of the women as we can tell she is scared when he hits the table meaning she is under his control.

Also Foley sound is used, we can hear this when the scene is very quiet yet there is a distinct tick tock noise coming from the clock this is used to create suspense between the two characters as we don’t know what they are going to say next so we are in suspense.
